Ashgill bryozoans from the Iberian Chains (NE Spain) and their contribution to the Late Ordovician biodiversity peak in North Gondwana Ameghiniana

In the lower-middle Ashgill Cystoid Limestone Formation of the Iberian Chains (NE Spain) twenty one bryozoan genera have been identified, which belong to the four Stenolaemata orders that were already spread worldwide by the Mid Ordovician: Cryptostomata, Cyclostomata, Cystoporata and Trepostomata. Five of them: Cyclophaenopora Spjeldnaes, Glauconomella Bassler, Orbignyella Ulrich and Bassler, Phaenopora Hall and Pseudostictoporella Ross have been identified here for the first time in the Mediterranean Province. This list increases the number of bryozoan genera known to sixty six, making it the most diversified group in the region for that period.

Darriwilian bryozoans from the San Juan Formation (Ordovician), Argentine Precordillera Ameghiniana

A detailed study is carried out on the taxonomy of the bryozoan fauna from the upper levels of the San Juan Formation (Darriwilian) in the Talacasto and Cerro Viejo sections, Argentinean Precordillera. Three bryozoan genera are described and two new species are erected: Lamottopora multispinosa sp. nov., Aostipora sanjuanensis sp. nov., and Phylloporinidae sp. indet. The paleoecological significance of the bryozoan fauna is discussed. The ramose bryozoans Lamottopora and Aostipora dominate in the Talacasto section. Some colonies probably lived attached directly to the substrate, while others occur attached to the surface of the abundant sponge fauna in the section. Freshwater sponges (Porifera, Demospongiae) in a benthic filter feeding community at the Guanacaste Dry Forest, Costa Rica Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

The freshwater sponges Trochospongilla variabilis Bonetto & Ezcurra de Drago (1973), Radiospongilla crateriformis (Potts, 1882), Spongilla cenota Penney & Racek (1968) and Corvoheteromeyenia heterosclera (Ezcurra de Drago, 1974) compose with the sphaerid bivalve Eupera cubensis (Prime, 1865) and several Phylactolaemata bryozoans a benthic filter feeding community living in seasonal lentic and lotic habitats with high Particulate Organic Carbon (POC), low conductivity and acid pH within the Costa Rica Dry Forest biome. The sponge specimens gathered led to the re-description of the four species.

Tunisian mega benthos from Infra (Posidonia meadows) and circalittoral (Coralligenous) sites OceanDocs

Several marine campaigns aiming to collect marine demosponges for specific research projects on their taxonomy and biogeography and to study the phenology and distribution of Posidonia oceanica a long the Tunisian coasts were conducted these last 10 years. They allowed a scuba diving prospecting of the infra and circalittoral zones of 555 marine stations. This field work was an occasion to describe some bottom’s associations, to highlight the general state of the main communities, specially the Posidonia and the coralligenous formations, and to draw up a list of their mega benthic species.
